Well today was a very interesting day! I arrived at the dog yard and it was beautifully covered with a light layer of snow. I think I was the only one in Fort Mac who was happy to see snow! I was already on coffee number two and already feeling good about what today will bring.
I hooked up the lines to the quad, strung out the picket line and started bringing out dogs. Today I ran a team of 14... The leaders were Odi and Gogi. Holy cow, am I ever impressed with Gogi. She is an amazing little leader with such a positive attitude. Odi was his usual goofy self, BUT he didn't try to turn the team around. I think he learnt his lesson while he was running in wheel! Next up was Paws and Digger. Both did awesome, I think paws was a little offended she wasn't in lead... Then there was Kita and Turtle, both really nice dogs showing a lot of great work ethics I'm looking for in my Quest team. Curley and Hickok are next, Curley was a bit off today.. I think she ate too much yesterday! Hickok did awesome as usual, he is such a nice dog! Up next.. Mudvayne and Rocket, both are power houses with a lot of stamina already! Buddha and Zues (the brothers) are the tallest dogs in the team, they run beautifully and don't cause any trouble! Finally in wheel, Hoback and Glacier. These guys run identically, which is nice to have especially in wheel. Both are very strong and know exactly what to do. Like today, Glaciers neckline broke and you couldn't even tell! He just kept working away!
The team passed a dead deer that was alongside of the trail. They had their noses in the air, but the ran past it with no issues. However further down the trail there was a raven sitting in the middle of the trail, the dogs all picked up their speed to try and catch him. At the last minute the raven flew away.. What a tease.
The snow made for a wonderful run, it was as muddy as it usually is and the dogs were all pumped up. I tried stopping for a break and the brakes couldn't even hold them back!
Finally after 16 miles I was starting to feel the effects of drinking a lot of coffee. I was bustin for a pee. When we got into the bushes I figured the dogs needed a break after running 16 miles straight and I'd have enough to go. So I put the brake on and jumped off the quad. I always have a stash of emergency TP in the quad! So off I got, I walk in front of the quad and squat down, just as I'm finishing up something crashed into me... Then ran me over. Well it was the quad, and there goes my team. And then there goes me running down the trail with my pants around my ankles! I catch up to them, pull up my pants and take off home with the dogs.
When we got back I took off all the dogs harnesses and did a little trial and error. Instead of walking the dogs back to their houses, I let them go individually to see if they would run back to their own houses. Well lets just say I was impressed with most of them. Mudvayne was the only one who decided that it was free time and not home time! Zues was a little out of sorts... I guess in his world he's the only one who gets to run back to his house off leash. So in protest he stood beside the quad until everyone was put away. To make it up to him we had a nice cuddle and belly rub. I think I'm starting to spoil him...
I made up a warm meal for the dogs and gave them all a nice big chunk of chicken!
